The glass doors of your walk-in cooler may be making you sweat

  • Those who have visited a convenience store or supermarket may have noticed sweat dripping from the glass doors of walk-in refrigerators as they approached the store or supermarket's front glass door. However, it can occur at any time of the year, and is more common in hot and humid weather (55% or greater relative humidity). The temperature at which dew point forms rises in direct proportion to the amount of relative humidity present in the atmosphere, as shown in the graph below.

     


    Generally speaking, condensation occurs most frequently when there is a disparity between the surface temperature outside the cooler or freezer and the temperature within the cooler or freezer. As long as the air is moving, it contributes to the rapid evaporation of water, which prevents condensation from forming on the surface of the water.

    It is because of the poor insulation provided by glass that condensation appears on glass doors on a frequent basis. The presence of condensation in this particular situation is more than a matter of appearances, as will be discussed later. Convenience store refrigerator doors are constantly being opened and closed, which makes them particularly susceptible to condensation problems in the long run.
